Give yourself a break

To all workers past and present: Did your company abide by this rule?
The “59-minute rule” is an informal rule in business, whereby (usually near a holiday) employees may be allowed to leave work early, often to beat heavy holiday traffic (the 59 minutes coming from the rule that leaving one full hour early requires the use of leave, whereas leaving 59 minutes early would not).
The companies that I worked for usually had a 10-15 minute rule. We were perched in our chairs waiting for the sign, to escape.

59 days have now passed since our last escape into the great wide open. I read today that the virus rarely gets transmitted when we are outdoors. It’s the crowded indoor spaces that are dangerous, especially when there is poor air circulation. It is supposed to be a warm, sunny day today, so guess what I will be doing? Yup. I am taking a walk, with a mask and a bottle of rocky mountain high in my pocket. Wee Doggie!!

This morning I enjoyed a little bit of heaven: Hot chocolate and a blueberry muffin. It put me in a good mood; good enough to get into some mischief later on today. I did manage to make a list of stuff I need to do, but I am a creature of habit, and won’t do any of it. My motto: If you can do something fun, go for it. At the end of your life, will you remember the time you spent cleaning? Or the days that you scrapped your list and enjoyed life?

Some of us are enjoying life a little too much. I am only speaking for myself, of course. Every day, virus or not, I am having one heck of a wonderful time. I can tell I am over the top, whenever I see a dog and become wildly ecstatic. After all, dogs can still be hugged. And some dogs love to have a beer or two with me. I wonder if I was a dog in a previous life.

Today’s wish for you? May all of you stay safe and healthy. And that you will choose happiness in spite of the inconveniences and enjoy the gift of life.

Yikes. What happened to RR?

Going back in time: Disco was hot, and so was club 54. You had to be “chosen” to get inside, to mingle with the celebrities. The club was closed due to tax evasion, but not before actor Alec Baldwin worked there for two months as a waiter.

Club 54 is still alive around here, at least for today. It is day 54 of the elite stay at home crowd in SE Pennsylvania. And guess who stayed in her pajamas for the past 2 days? Yesterday, I had an irresistible urge for a California steak sandwich. I knew Kait would not mind if I stopped by in my robe and pjs, for takeout. She looked adorable in her flowery mask. I could tell she was smiling; her eyes gave her away. I miss Friday afternoons with Ms Kait and our gang of peeps. Such a good time.

It was a rainy movie day. Two of my old favorites: Anatomy of a Murder and 3 days of the Condor. Today, Dial M for Murder. It is amazing how I have transformed from a bar fly into a house fly, buzzed up, flying around the neighborhood in my robe and pjs, watching old movies and wishing Robert Redford still looked good. Have you seen a photo of him lately? Yikes!

It has been said that when people talk about the weather, they are really boring and have no imagination, no originality and little, if any conversational skills. So what? It is damn cold today. Hasn’t been this cold since I walked 3 miles to go to school in a blizzard, and lost a snow shoe. Well, actually, it wasn’t 3 miles. It wasn’t school either. I was walking to a bar. But I did lose a snow shoe. If there is one thing that annoys me, it is someone who tells tall tales. Not me. There is always some truth behind the bold faced lies.

Checked my calendar and decided to cancel my doctor appointment this month. I really don’t want to take the time to do something constructive. After all, I only have another month to get my act together. And then on June 4th, with hope and tears in my eyes, finding out that I “ain’t going nowhere” any time soon. I am not in control. The virus has the upper hand. Who would have thought that our hands were the culprits, the carriers of infection, self imposed on our selves, when we absent mindedly touched our faces?

3 positives for today?

1. The sun is shining.

2. I have half a cheese steak in the fridge, unless I ate it in the middle of the night.

3. The mountains on the Coors Light cans are blue. Poppy top, Baby!

Be safe!

We are all mad here

Mark Twain had a “thing” for the number 44. One of his books was titled : Number 44, The Mysterious Stranger. The meaning of “No. 44” and the significance it held for Mark Twain remains a mystery. Scholars who continue to study the manuscripts will likely feel compelled to try and answer the question.

For us, the number 44 is not so mysterious. It is simply another day to spend in eternal bliss, hiding from the world of germs and gremlins. Some scientists are saying that we should come out of hiding; that the isolation is weakening our immune systems. Others? Only testing and retesting should be our guide to the end to this madness.

As I slowly go mad, it is Lewis Carroll I find infinitely wise:

. But I don’t want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the Cat: “we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad.”
“How do you know I’m mad?” said Alice.
“You must be,” said the Cat, “or you wouldn’t have come here.”

Well, we are all here, waiting, some more than others. “In time”, we are told, “in time.” “Be patient.” What is time anyway? I believe it is an illusion. The only meaningful moments are the moments themselves. See what I mean? I am mad:

Time for this mad hatter to stroll down the driveway in my robe and pjs, with the wildest of hair dos, with empty beer cans and oreo packages for waste management pickup. As a rebellious gesture, I refuse to wear a mask on my short journey this morning.

May you be safe, healthy, and mad on this day, Wednesday, April 29, 2020.
